Wholesale prices of almost all vegetables have shot up in the Coimbatore markets, hitting the households.

M. Rajendran, president of the TK Market Vegetable Traders Association, said prices of drumsticks and tomatoes have shot up in the last few days.

Prices of tomatoes and drumsticks usually soar during November – December because of rains. The wholesale price of drumsticks in the Dharapuram market was ₹ 650 a kg. In Coimbatore, the wholesale traders are able to source at ₹400 to ₹450 a kg. However, arrivals have dwindled and wholesale dealers have almost stopped sourcing now. The prices will ease when the arrivals start from the northern States, especially Agra, he said.

Wholesale price of tomatoes in the TK market on Monday was ₹60 a kg. It touched ₹100 a kg on Tuesday. The arrivals are from Karnataka now. However, because of rains in Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra, the crop is delayed in these States. So, the arrivals of Karnataka are going to these States.

About 10,000 boxes, each with 25 kg, come to Coimbatore a day. However, the arrivals are just one-tenth now.

Tomato prices are likely to hold at this level for at least a month.

The demand also reduces when the prices go up steeply. These are used only by those who are particular about using the vegetables for the wedding feasts, and specific restaurants that do no want to change the menu. Though households cannot afford such high prices for long, farmers are gaining now, he added.
