Violin maestro A. Kanyakumari was honoured with the Mudhra Award of Excellence in the city on Monday during the inauguration of the 31st Fine Arts Festival, organised by Mudhra.
While speaking at the event, veteran Bharatanatyam exponent Padma Subrahmanyam said she vividly remembered how Ms. Kanyakumari played for veteran Carnatic musician M.L. Vasanthakumari at a very young age. “She is my friend, but I am also her fan. I’m an admirer of [Ms. Kanyakumari]. She has dedicated her entire life to music. She would also encourage her students so much,” she said.
Nalli Kuppuswami Chetti, industrialist and president of Mudhra, was also felicitated during the occasion for receiving the Padma Bhushan Award. He noted that Ms. Kanyakumari had received so many awards in her musical career. Mudhra Bhaskar, founder-secretary of Mudhra, said they were giving some importance to instrumental music in this year’s music festival.
Ms. Kanyakumari thanked the organisers for the honour. The Sangeetha Mudhra Awards were presented to S. Swaminathan (vocal), Prithvi Bhaskar (violin), and Aduthurai G. Guruprasadh (mridangam).
