Vivasayigal Sangam (non-political) has urged Chief Minister M.K. Stalin to prevail upon the HR and CE Department to not treat a section of tenants of the land belonging to Pateeswarar Temple in Perur taluk as encroachers.
In a representation to the Chief Minister during his visit to Coimbatore, State general secretary of the farmers’ association P. Kandasamy said the tenants of the temple’s agricultural land faced difficulty as the Record of Tenancy Rights, as per the Tamil Nadu Agricultural Lands Act, 1969, has not been fully enforced. Farmers tilling the temple land have been paying the rent fixed through court.
Despite the Tamil Nadu Inam Estates (Abolition and Conversion into Ryotwari) Act 1963 paving way for cultivators to use the land without hassles and pay revenue to the government, the HR and CE Department was attempting to take away the land forcibly and auctioning it, he alleged.
Agricultural land under tenancy is bound by The Tamil Nadu Public Trusts (Regulation of Administration of Agricultural Lands) Act, 1961, and the Supreme Court is seized of the matter. The temple land should not be taken over from the tenants by the HR and CE Department till the Supreme Court delivers its verdict, he said.
While those who fail to settle the court-stipulated lease amount could be handled as per law, the HR and CE Department should cease to cause hindrance to others who are prepared to pay, Mr. Kandasamy said.
