The Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) has begun identifying and removing encroachments along stormwater drains in the city to ease traffic congestion, prevent waterlogging and widen the roads.
On Tuesday, as per instructions of VMC Commissioner Dhyanachandra H.M., town planning staff of the corporation demolished a house, allegedly constructed without any permissions, near the Skew Bridge.
In a press release, Mr. Dhyanachandra said the corporation is focusing on removing encroachments to ensure that there is no obstruction to the flow of drain water and also to address water stagnation. He urged the public to refrain from constructing buildings without permissions. Any unauthorised structures, built till August 31, 2025, must be regularised through the Building Penalisation Scheme.
According to the Town Planning Department, six families were living in the house that was demolished on Tuesday. The families had been provided alternative accommodation a long time ago and had been served notices and given time to vacate, the Department said. They added that such demolition drives would be taken up near ESI hospital in Gunadala too.
