Ward-level special meetings were held across all 60 wards of Thoothukudi Corporation on Wednesday. Mayor Jegan Periyasamy chaired the meeting held at Housing Board Colony in the 3rd ward of the corporation.

The special meeting has been planned to address and ensure that people in urban local bodies receive essential services such as drinking water, streetlights, drainage, solid waste management , roads, parks and other necessary infrastructure facilities.

At meeting Mr. Periyasamy said, “During the previous 10 years of AIADMK’s regime, many requests went unheard, despite repeated appeals. But under the Dravidian model government, over the past four years, we have been reaching out to your homes directly and fulfilling your needs promptly.”

Recalling that the same area has been severely inundated in the previous year’s rain, he added that the situation no longer exists now. “New storm water drains have been constructed and rainwater is being properly discharged through them. Even during the recent spell of rain, the accumulated water was cleared within an hour,” he noted.

Mr. Periyasamy further observed that the corporation is identifying and implementing developments needed for the next generation. “A new women’s park is being established in the Housing board area,” he said.

He urged the residents to understand their role in the city’s development. Pointing out the accumulation of plastic bags in sewage drains, which causes major blockages, he exhorted the people to avoid using plastic bags. “Everyone must cooperate to make Thoothukudi a clean and green city,” Mr. Periyasamy added.
