Water released from Papanasam and Manimuthar dams for ‘Pisanam’ paddy cultivation

Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker M. Appavu on Saturday released water from Manimuthar and Papanasam Dams for the ‘pisanam’ paddy season, the district’s second crop season taken up every year during the northeast monsoon.

The water to be released from Papanasam Dam via 11 irrigation channels in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi districts will be sustained for 151 days i.e. till March 31, 2026 for nourishing paddy to be raised on 86,107 acres – 2,260 acres under North Kodaimelazhagiyaan Channel, 870 acres under South Kodaimelazhagiyaan Channel, 2,460 acres under Nadhiyunni Channel, 12,500 acres under Kannadiyan Channel, 6,000 acres under Kodagan Channel, 9,500 acre under Palayam Channel, 6,410 acre under Tirunelveli Channel, all in Tirunelveli district, 12,762 acre under Marudhur Melakkal Channel, 7,785 under Marudhur Keezhakkaal Channel, 12,760 under Thenkaal Channel and 12,800 acre under Vadakaal Channel inThoothukudi district.

The 35 cusecs of water being released from Manimuthar Dam in Perunkaal Channel for 151 days – till March 31, 2026 – will benefit 2,756.62 acre in five revenue villages in Ambasamudram taluk of Tirunelveli district.

“Since the quantum of water to be released from the dams will be decided based on the storage level and the rainfall in catchment areas during the northeast monsoon, farmers should judiciously use the water,” Mr. Appavu said.

Collector R. Sukumar, Palayamkottai MLA M. Abdul Wahab, chairman of Tirunelveli district panchayat V.S.R. Jegadeesh and Superintending Engineer, Public Works Department, Sivakumar were present.

Due to release of water, Dr. Sukumar appealed to the public to take bath cautiously in the river and urged the bathers not to move to the deeper part of the perennial river while taking bath.
