The Water Resources Department (WRD) officials released water from the Vaigai dam for old ayacutdars in Madurai district from Saturday.

According to officials, the State government had directed the WRD to release water for the old ayacutdars of Ramanathapuram, Sivaganga and Madurai districts.

From October 27 to November 13, a total of 1824 mcft shall be released depending on the storage level in the reservoir for the three districts in phases, they said.

The officials said that from Oct 27 to Nov 1, they had released 624 mcft of water for Ramanathapuram district – 3. From Nov 2 to 6, a total of 772 mcft of water was released for Sivaganga district -2 and from Saturday till Nov 13, a total of 428 mcft would be released.

The Vaigai dam, which has a storage capacity of 71 feet, had a little over 68 feet on Saturday. The inflow into the reservoir is expected to be steady in the coming days, officials said. Hence, the old ayacutdars in Madurai district would get water till Nov 13.
