Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Wednesday said her government would soon deliver on key welfare promises for women, including monthly financial assistance of ₹2,500 and subsidised LPG cylinders.
Addressing a ‘Jhuggi Swabhiman Sabha’ in Wazirpur Industrial Area in support of BJP candidate from Ashok Vihar, Veena Asija, for the upcoming Municipal Corporation of Delhi bypolls, Ms. Gupta said, “We have promised ₹2,500 and subsidised gas cylinders in our manifesto. Not a single promise will remain unfulfilled.”
The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress criticised the government for failing to implement the promises even after nine months of coming to power, calling it a “betrayal” of Delhi’s women.
“As a woman herself, she had raised the hopes of women… that this amount would support them and ease their struggles. But today, the women of Delhi feel that they have been misled,” Delhi Congress chief Devendra Yadav said.
‘Need a year’s time’
Ms. Gupta blamed the delay on the previous AAP government, claiming that it left the State treasury empty. She said this slowed the rollout of several welfare schemes. “They will come and ask why ₹2,500 has not been paid yet. Tell them they left the coffers empty and provided no funds for the city’s development,” she said, adding that her government needed at least a year to “stabilise the system” and fully implement its plans.
The Chief Minister also vowed permanent housing for slum residents. “We promise that no one’s house will be demolished. It is our responsibility to provide housing to those whose homes were demolished,” she said.
‘System reset’
Ms. Gupta emphasised that her government had not discontinued any schemes of the previous administration and instead launched new initiatives. “It takes time to reset the system. Infrastructure like roads, streets, drains, and toilets will be built across Delhi. The Ayushman Bharat Yojana has to be implemented, Atal canteens have to be opened, and free power and water supply are to be continued,” she said.
Meanwhile, Leader of the Opposition Atishi blamed the government for “unresolved civic issues”. “People of Delhi are regretting voting for the BJP. It has failed on every issue – water, electricity, roads, and air pollution. People will respond to the division of Delhi by the BJP,” she said.
