The Kerala government has submitted before the Kerala High Court that it will make its stance clear on enacting a legislation banning black magic, sorcery and other superstitious practices within a week.

The legal advise given in this regard by the Advocate General is being perused, it added. The State government had informed the High Court in July that a legislation banning black magic, sorcery, and other superstitious practices, was under consideration and that the Cabinet had earlier postponed a decision on this due to the ‘legal complexities’ involved.

The Kerala Yukthivadi Sangham had filed a public interest litigation (PIL) in 2022, seeking a law similar to those enacted in Maharashtra and Karnataka, to prohibit harmful rituals. This was in the wake of the alleged human sacrifice of two women in Pathanamthitta district by three people.
