Former Devikulam MLA and Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader S. Rajendran on Saturday said he would not support party candidates in the local body elections.

Talking to mediapersons in Munnar, Mr. Rajendran said he had no ties with the CPI(M). “I will not support any CPI(M) candidate. But I will support Bharatiya Janata Party, Communist Party of India, and Congress candidates in this election,” he said.

“Candidates of the BJP and other parties had supported me when I contested in elections and I will support them this time. I will not support the CPI(M) even if the party seeks a consensus during the election period,” said Mr. Rajendran.

“In December 2021, the CPI(M) district committee suspended me alleging lapses during the Assembly polls. The party inquiry commission had reported that I abstained from the campaign of party candidate A. Raja. But the allegation was not taken up at the other party conferences. A State secretariat member and a district secretariat member altered the district conference report to implicate me. It was a planned move,” said Mr. Rajendran.

Contrary to reports, Mr. Rajendran did not make any announcements about joining the BJP. During the last general elections, CPI(M) leaders had approached Mr. Rajendran and sought his support. But he had consistently distanced himself from the party.

Mr. Rajendran is a three-time MLA from Devikulam and has a sizeable influence among plantation workers in the constituency.
