A woman who had been absconding in connection with a ₹5 lakh Deepavali chit fund fraud case was arrested by R.K. Nagar Police.
Police said P. Padmavathi, 44, of Tondiarpet, had been working at a restaurant near the Power House area, Tondiarpet, a few months ago. The restaurant was run by a woman named Selvi alias Tamilselvi, who announced that she was starting a Deepavali chit fund. Believing her, Padmavathi introduced around 25 people she knew to join the chit fund in 2024.
Over a period of one year, Selvi alias Tamilselvi collected nearly ₹5 lakh from the participants. However, when the 25 members asked for their returns during Deepavali 2025, Tamilselvi failed to repay the amount and kept deceiving them. Based on a complaint lodged by Padmavathi, the R.K. Nagar Police registered a case.
During the inquiry, it was found that Tamilselvi had filed anticipatory bail petitions in the courts. However, she neither deposited the ₹1 lakh security amount ordered by the court nor complied with the court’s conditions and had gone into hiding. Acting on a tip-off, the R.K. Nagar Crime Branch team traced and arrested the accused, Selvi alias Tamilselvi, 35, of Korukkupet.
