A 45-year-old woman was arrested by Government Railway Police (GRP) on Saturday for stealing 13 sovereigns of gold jewellery from a commuter at Katpadi railway station in Vellore.

The arrested person was identified as K. Durga, a native of Maharashtra. Initial inquiry revealed that victim S. Poovendan, 66, a retired bank staff, was waiting at the railway station to board a train on September 26.

Police said that as he was about to board the express train, Poovendan realised that his handbag that contained gold jewellery was missing.

He filed a complaint and the GRP police registered a case. Special teams analysed CCTV footage in the railway station and found a woman had stolen the handbag.

They tracked her through CCTV footage and mobile phone signals and found the location of her in Maharashtra and nabbed her.
