Three members of a family — a woman and her two sons — were found dead inside their flat in south-east Delhi’s Kalkaji on Friday, an officer said. The deceased have been identified as Anuradha Kapoor, 52, Ashish Kapoor, 32, and Chaitanya Kapoor, 27.

The bodies were found at 2.47 p.m. when a bailiff, accompanied by police personnel, went to the rented flat to serve a court notice.

When repeated knocks went unanswered, they used another key to open the flat, said the officer.

He added that a note was found next to the bodies in which the deceased referred to mental health issues.

The bodies have been moved to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences mortuary for post-mortem examination.

No foul play: police

The police have ruled out foul play and initiated proceedings under Section 194 (unnatural death) of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

They are looking into the family’s financial condition, their social circumstances and other factors that may have contributed to the three taking the extreme step.

An officer said the family was likely under severe debt since the death of Anuradha’s husband four years ago.

‘Kept changing places’

“They kept changing their accommodation and failed to pay the rent,” said the officer.

He added that the bailiff had visited the flat to execute a court order directing that it be vacated, as the family had not paid rent for a year and a half.

Speaking to The Hindu on condition of anonymity, neighbours said they used to hear frequent loud noises from the flat occupied by the three, adding that the family largely kept to itself.

“A few weeks ago, the police had visited their flat,” one neighbour said. Another said a police team accompanied by ambulance staff had taken away the two brothers around 15-20 days ago.
