A shepherdess was reportedly killed by a carnivore, believed to be a tiger in the buffer zone of the Mudumalai Tiger Reserve on Monday afternoon.
The woman, a resident of Mavanallah, identified as B. Nagi, 70, was reportedly grazing her livestock when residents noticed her being dragged away by a carnivore, which they identified to be a tiger. Forest Department officials and staff, who were informed of the incident, quickly rushed to the site of the attack and began looking for the woman. On Monday evening, her body was found in a stream a short distance away.
This is the first reported human casualty caused by a tiger attack since 2021, when an injured tiger, MDT23, reportedly killed three persons in separate incidents. Villagers gathered in Mavanallah and called on the Forest Department to capture the tiger. Gudalur MLA, Pon Jeyaseelan, also arrived at the spot soon afterwards, and joined in with the demands of the local villagers demanding the capture of the animal responsible. The Nilgiris district superintendent of police, N. S. Nisha, and Deputy Director of MTR, M.G.Ganesan, held talks with the protesters, promising swift action.
Forest Department officials said that they would place camera traps near the site of the attack, and also look for more clues to identify the animal responsible. They also said that they would immediately sanction compensation to the next of kin of the deceased. They also said that they would increase surveillance of the area to ensure that people do not venture into forested areas till the animal was identified.
