An elderly woman was found murdered at her residence in LVR Colony in Soolai on Wednesday night, and five sovereigns of gold jewellery she was wearing were reported stolen.
The victim, Kamala (65), had been residing alone following the death of her husband Manikandan two years ago. Her son, Mahendra Senadhipathi, a manager in a private bank in Puducherry, had attempted to contact her over the phone on Wednesday night. When repeated calls went unanswered, he alerted neighbours to check on her.
Neighbours, who entered the house found Kamala lying dead in the room with her throat slit. They immediately informed her son and the Erode North police. The police sent the body to the Government Erode Medical College and Hospital in Perundurai. Fingerprint experts and a sniffer dog were pressed into service, and CCTV footage from the neighbourhood is being examined.
A case has been registered, and five special teams led by DSP Muthukrishnan have been formed to nab the accused. The police have picked up Ramar, a native of Madurai, and he is being interrogated.
