The city police on Thursday (November 20) nabbed a 47-year-old woman who allegedly attempted to steal gold ornaments from a jewellery shop at Pantheerankavu in Kozhikode district. The accused has been identified as Soudhabi Basheer, a resident of Poovattuparamba.
According to police sources, the woman attempted the theft following a quarrel with the salesmen at the shop around 10 a.m. She allegedly used pepper spray against the staff during her effort to take the ornaments.
She reportedly poured an inflammable liquid on her body in an attempt to escape, but was restrained by a few local shop owners. She was later taken into custody by the Pantheerankavu police for interrogation.
Police sources said the woman was suspected of having visited the shop three times as part of her plan to steal the ornaments. Surveillance camera visuals from the spot would be examined to get a clearer picture, they added.
