As India closed out a historic chase against Australia to seal a third appearance in the summit clash of the Women’s ODI World Cup, another rat race ensued online – a scramble for tickets.
Passes for the final, priced at ₹150, were made available a week ago, with many fans seemingly waiting for India to make it before deciding to purchase passes.
The ICC confirmed that all stands at the D.Y. Patil Stadium here would be open for the deciding fixture. However, on BookMyShow – the official ticketing partner – only select stands were available.
That too was promptly disabled after India triumphed over the Aussies, with a ‘Coming Soon’ message greeting desperate fans. This, while rabid reselling of tickets emerged on social media and secondary marketplaces like Viagogo. Tickets were available for upwards of ₹4500, nearly 30 times the original cost. That rose to ₹13,000 – ₹25,000 by the end of the day.
VIP seating had one ticket left for sale on Saturday morning, priced at a whopping ₹1,06,959. That too was snapped up in no time.
Around noon, BookMyShow’s information on the listing changed to ‘event closed’ without the portal being open for the purchase of tickets at any point during the 30-odd hours before closure.
On Sunday, hundreds of fans were waiting outside the gates of the stadium, hoping for a way in. Among them was a local resident who had brought her daughter, hoping to gift her a match day experience for her birthday. The massive ‘sold out’ board outside didn’t matter, nor did torrential rain, even if their wait went in vain.
A clamour for tickets is a new phenomenon for the women’s game and a welcome one, but old faultlines like hoarding and spiked pricing are anything but that.
