The Water Resources Department (WRD) will develop the new road proposed between the M.G.R. Statue Junction and Sunnambukaranpatti, along the Uyyakondan river bank in Tiruchi.

The road was conceived mainly as an alternative to the heavily congested Vayalur Road in the city, which has been struggling to accommodate the high volume of traffic.

Initially, the work was planned to be executed by the Projects Wing of the Department of Highways, which had prepared the Detailed Project Report. However, it has now been decided that the road will be developed by the WRD, which has jurisdiction over the bunds along the river, official sources said.

The project was announced by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin in 2021. It aims to serve as an alternative route to the Tiruchi-Kuzhumani-Jeeyapuram Road, a major district road (MDR-461), and the Allithurai-Thogamalai Road (MDR-12) as well.

The new two-lane road, with a width of 7.5 metres, is proposed to developed at total cost of ₹186 crore, including about ₹65 crore earmarked for land acquisition. According to sources, about 40,000 sq. m of lands would be acquired at a few places along the river bund.

The road is set to link the city to the inner link road being developed along the Koraiyar and Kudamuritti river banks by the Tiruchi Corporation and the semi ring road to be developed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), connecting the major national highways around the city.

The road will be built as an elevated structure while crossing the Puthur Weir and aqueduct, the confluence point of the Uyyakondan, the Koraiyar, and the Kudamuritti rivers, near the Kuzhumayi Amman Temple in the city. It will include a high-level rotary connecting the new link road being built by the Tiruchi Corporation along the Koraiyar bund from Panjapur (near the Integrated Bus Stand) to the Karur Highway.

City residents have long been seeking the development of the road as the narrow Vayalur Main Road has been struggling to cater to the rapid urbanisation in recent years. According to the sources, the project would be taken up once the administrative sanction is obtained.
