Yakshagana artist dies after ending performance

Yakshagana artist Eshwar Gowda passed away in the ‘chowki’ (green room) of over a century old Mandarthi Sri Durgaparameshwari Dashavatara Yakshagana Mela after completing his performance at a show at Souda, near Kundapur, in Udupi district on Wednesday night.

He was 51 and is survived by his wife and two sons.

Eshwar Gowda, who was an artist for nearly three decades, performed the role of Mahishasura in Devi Mahatme episode in troupe number 2 of the mela last night.

It is said that he suffered cardiac arrest while removing his costumes and facial make-up in the ‘chowki’ after returning from the stage.

Hailing from Sringeri, Eshwar Gowda had performed in Megaravalli, Madamakki, Amruteshwari and Shivarajapura Yakshagana melas before joining Mandarthi troupe.

Udupi Yakshagana Kalaranga has condoled his death.
