
Ganesh Kolekady’s last rites will be performed on Saturday at Athikaribettu (November 8), near Mulky.

Yakshagana poet, scholar, script writer, and the State government’s Parthi Subba awardee Ganesh Kolekady passed away at his residence at Athikaribettu near Mulky on Friday (November 7).
He was 54 and is survived by his mother. Mr. Kolekady was ailing for a long time.
He had written about 60 Yakshagana ‘prasangas’.
He was an authority over Yakshagana ‘chandassu’ (prosody) and had mastered it.
Mr. Kolekady wrote a total of six dramas both in Kannada and Tulu. He had taught Yakshagana to hundreds of students at his home for over a decade. As a talamaddale ‘arthadari’, he had participated in a number of programmes in Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, and Gujarat. He had also published two research works.
Karnataka Yakshagana Academy presented him with its top Parthi Subba Award in 2022. Yakshagana Kalaranga of Udupi got a house built for him in 2014 and had presented its Kanaka Annayya Shetty Award.
Mr. Kolekady was bedridden for two decades after he was attacked in Mumbai by some assailants.
M. Gangadhar Rao and Murali Kadekar, president and secretary, respectively, of Yakshagana Kalaranga, Udupi, have condoled his death.
Mr. Kolekady’s last rites will be performed on Saturday (November 8) at Athikaribettu near Mulky.
