A 30-year-old musician and former music teacher at St. Aloysius (Deemed-to-be-University) created a record on Wednesday by playing the flute while swimming backstroke for more than 700 metres in the college’s swimming pool in Mangaluru on Wednesday (October 29).

Ruben Jason Machado received a provisional certificate from the Asia Head of Golden Book of World Records, V. Manish.

On Wednesday morning, Mr. Machado entered the swimming pool at around 10 a.m. For about 45 minutes, he swam backstroke by putting fins to his legs and playing the flute. He first played Christmas carols, followed by a few Hindustani Classical compositions, while swimming more than five rounds of the 50X25 metre-pool.

Mr. Machado told reporters that he started swimming three years ago. For the last last three months, he has been practising backstroke and playing the flute. ā€œThis is the first time I swam more than 700 meters,ā€ the swimmer-musician said.

Mr. Manish stated that the exact distance Mr. Machado swam will be notified soon.

Praveen Martis, Vice-Chancellor of St. Aloysius (Deemed-to-be-University), lauded the feat.
