A youth charged with robbing and raping an 85-year-old woman in Sulur limits a year ago was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the Mahila Court in Coimbatore, on Saturday.

A habitual criminal Shahul Hamid (25), a labourer of Pallapalayam, had, on November 24, 2025, gained entry into the house of the elderly woman at Pappampatti and committed the crimes.

He had also recorded the act of rape with his mobile phone, after snatching her five sovereign gold chain, and threatened to leak the video if the victim complained about it, before fleeing the spot.

The victim had initially lodged a complaint of robbery, and after she had complained of the rape crime, with the support of family members, a few days later, the case was altered to robbery and rape.

The investigating team had arrested Shahul Hameed just before his escape after undergoing treatment at the Sulur Government Hospital for injuries he had sustained in a road accident after committing the crime.

The police also confiscated his mobile phone and found the video recording in it.

The accused was arrested and charged under BNS Sections 332 A (trespass to commit an offence), 309 sub-section 6 (aggravated robbery – causing hurt during the act), and Section 64 (rape), with Section 66E of The Information Technology Act.

The Judge V. Sundararaj also imposed ₹1,500 fine on the accused, and recommended ₹5 lakh compensation to the victim through the District Legal Services Authority.
