Youth dies after falling into pit dug for bridge construction near Perundurai

A youth died after his motorcycle fell into a pit dug for bridge construction work near Perundurai on Wednesday night (November 5, 2025).

The deceased was identified as Yoganathan, a native of Tiruppur district. He had come to the Government Erode Medical College and Hospital at Perundurai to visit a relative undergoing treatment. After visiting his relative, he was returning home on his motorcycle when the accident occurred.

Road users said bridge construction work was under way at Mettupudur panchayat, where a large pit had been dug. However, no proper barricades or warning signs had been placed at the site. Yoganathan, unaware of the pit, is said to have lost control of his vehicle and fallen into it along with his motorcycle, sustaining severe head injuries.

Motorists passing through the area noticed the mishap and rescued Yoganathan from the pit. He was rushed to the hospital, but he died without responding to treatment.

Locals and motorists alleged that the accident could have been averted if safety barricades had been installed around the pit. The Perundurai police have registered a case and are investigating.
