The Erode North police arrested a 20-year-old youth on Saturday (November 29, 2025) in connection with the murder of an elderly woman and theft of five sovereigns of gold jewellery.

On November 27, Kamalam, 68, of L.V.R. Colony in Periyasemur, was found dead with head injuries, and her jewellery and mobile phone were missing. Based on a complaint, the police registered a case of murder for gain.

During inquiries, police questioned workers from other districts who were staying in the area and employed at a private company. Investigations revealed that P. Ramu, from Ramanathapuram district, had not reported for work on Thursday (November 27, 2025). He was traced and picked up at the Avinashi bus stop in Tiruppur district and taken to the police station, where he confessed to the crime.

He told the police that he had assaulted the woman with a pressure cooker. The stolen jewellery was recovered. He was produced before a court and remanded in judicial custody.
