A man who suffered severe burn injuries after setting himself on fire near Uppal on Thursday night died while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital on Friday.
Police identified him as Sai Eshwar Chari, 31, from Jagadgirigutta. He had set himself ablaze outside the office of a YouTube channel in Medipally police limits. Officers said the exact reason behind the act is not yet established, and claims that it was linked to demand for enhancement of BC reservations are part of allegations that are still being verified.
Hospital staff said he died around 1 p.m. after being admitted with more than 90% burns. His body has been shifted to the mortuary for post-mortem examination.
After his death, groups began gathering outside Gandhi Hospital, prompting Chilkalguda Police to deploy additional personnel at the premises to prevent any disturbance. The investigation is under way.
Meanwhile, BC Welfare Association president and MP R. Krishnaiah termed it unfortunate and urged the government to implement enhanced reservations as promised. BRS working president K.T. Rama Rao and BRS MLA T. Harish Rao blamed Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy for the youngster’s death, and demanded ₹50 lakh compensation for the family.
