Senior TDP leader and former Minister Devineni Umamaheswara Rao has accused the YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) of attempting to stall the development of Amaravati after bringing the capital project to a grinding halt during its term, by spreading disinformation on the funds being raised by the coalition government and the works in progress.

The YSRCP did not spare Union Finance Minister Nirmala  Sitharaman from its mischievous campaign during the laying of foundation for regional offices of 15 banks in Amaravati, he said, cautioning it (YSRCP) of the consequences of playing with the people’s sentiments.

Addressing the media at the TDP central office, near Mangalagiri, on Wednesday, Mr. Umamaheswara Rao said former Chief Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy should be mindful of the fact that his government had to beat a hasty retreat on the proposed three capitals due to the Amaravati farmers’ 1,631-day agitation, during which period 272 farmers died because of the anguish caused by his ill-advised decision to have separate capitals for administrative, judicial and executive functions in Amaravati, Kurnool and Visakhapatnam respectively.

This was intended to abandon Amaravati on grounds which the YSRCP could not justify. Even after paying a heavy price for disrupting the development of Amaravati, the YSRCP continued to instil fear among the farmers about giving land under the second phase of Land Pooling Scheme (LPS) to put the NDA Government in the dock for political gain.

About 16,000 workers were toiling day and night in Amaravati, he said, expressing confidence that the construction of NGOs’ and MLA quarters and All India Services officers’ residential buildings would be completed by the end of March 2026.
