The Coimbatore Municipal Corporation has secured group insurance coverage for 484 conservancy workers following a direction from the Tamil Nadu State Commission for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Each worker has been provided with an insurance coverage of ₹10 lakh.
“This is the first time that a Municipal Corporation has done this. We have been fighting for more than a year to get insurance coverage for conservancy workers,” said Imayam, Chairman-in-charge of the Commission. He said the Commission had received the list of workers covered under the group insurance scheme.
Following the Commission’s direction, the Commissioner of the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation directed Srinivasa Waste Management Service (P) Ltd. to provide group insurance coverage to the conservancy workers. The civic body also asked the company to rectify issues relating to ESI and PF, provide protective equipment, facilitate education for the children of conservancy workers, and ensure that the workers were provided identity cards, uniforms and other facilities.
“There are another 4,000 workers who are yet to be covered under the insurance scheme. I urge the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation to bring them under insurance coverage. Other Municipalities and Corporations should take a cue from the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation and introduce an insurance scheme,” Mr. Imayam said.
He also said that the Commission’s sustained efforts have also resulted in the Coimbatore Municipal Corporation directing the company supplying conservancy workers to take responsibility for workers injured while on duty. The company has also been directed not to deduct two days’ salary for one day of leave.
The Commission has also instructed the conservancy company not to transfer women workers from their existing workplaces and provide drinking water and rest room for parking areas.
