In a surprise check, sleuths attached to the Madurai district unit of the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption seized ₹13.88 lakh from the office of the Sub-Registrar, Kalligudi.
According to a DVAC source, the check was conducted based on specific information that Rajeswari, Assistant Sub-Registrar (in-charge), was demanding bribe from people coming for registration, and document writers.
The sleuths found unaccounted cash to the tune of ₹1,79,710 in her handbag.
Besides, ₹12,09,000, which also could not be accounted for, was seized from the trunk of an SUV, owed by real estate broker Dhanasekaran, in which she was about to leave the office, along with him and his relative Sivaperumal, who is a Revenue Inspector for Land Acquisition at Madurai Collectorate.
Further investigation is under way.
