The University of Calicut has set aside ₹2 crore for setting up a Centre of Excellence in Artificial Intelligence on its campus at Tenhipalam in Malappuram district.
This was announced by Vice-Chancellor P. Raveendran at a Senate meeting on Thursday where the Budget for the 2026-27 financial year was presented by P.K. Khaleemudheen, chairperson, Syndicate standing committee on finance. The Budget estimates a revenue of ₹624.28 crore and an expenditure of ₹623.92 crore. A sum of ₹55.25 crore has been set aside for the completion of ongoing works. Research activities would get ₹5.89 crore, fellowships ₹4.5 crore, research seminars ₹2.7 crore and the university students’ union would get ₹1.25 crore.
Meanwhile, Senate members affiliated with the United Democratic Front alleged that most of the projects presented in the Budget were similar to those proposed in the 2024-25 and 2025-26 budgets. Some members alleged that work had begun on fewer than 30% of those projects. They claimed that projects such as sports hostel, teachers’ hostel, staff flat, School of Music, modernisation of CH Mohammed Koya Library, new canteen building, and convention centre were yet to be launched.
The meeting also passed a resolution urging the government to make arrangements for creating exit points from the national highway near the university campus at Kohinoor and outside Tagore Nikethan complex.
