The Andhra Pradesh Municipal Administration and Urban Development Department has extended financial assistance of ₹33.15 lakh to the family of Vundi Anil Kumar, an APCOS welder who was electrocuted while on duty in the Mangalagiri-Tadepalli Municipal Corporation limits.
Principal Secretary S. Suresh Kumar handed over a cheque for ₹28 lakh towards insurance benefits to the bereaved family on Friday. The assistance included ₹20 lakh under the Personal Accident Insurance scheme and ₹8 lakh towards education support for the deceased employee’s two children.
The Municipal Corporation had earlier provided ₹5 lakh as ex gratia and ₹15,000 towards funeral expenses, taking the total assistance to ₹33.15 lakh.
Mr. Anil Kumar, 51, had been working as an APCOS welder since April 2010 and was posted at Nulakapeta in Tadepalli. He was electrocuted on June 12, 2026, and died. He is survived by his wife, a daughter and a son.
Mr. Suresh Kumar said the case highlighted the need for a strong social security framework for outsourcing and frontline municipal workers.
About 35,000 municipal workers across urban local bodies in the State have so far been enrolled under the salary-linked insurance protection scheme. Eight workers who died under different circumstances have received insurance benefits totalling about ₹80 lakh, he said.
The department is also promoting health and accident protection among municipal workers and has urged Municipal Commissioners to create awareness about the available benefits and procedures for filing claims.
