The district unit of the Congress celebrated the 140th Foundation Day of the party in the city on December 28, with a resolve to uphold constitutional values and oppose the BJP’s brand of politics.
The event, held at Congress Bhavan under the aegis of the Mysuru District Congress, underlined the importance of adhering to the party’s ideology and conviction. The chief guest was former Minister Kimmane Ratnakar.
Building the Congress party cannot be achieved merely by offering floral tributes, he said, and told party workers, “The true respect to the Foundation Day lies in taking the Congress’ ideas and ideology to the people.”
Mr. Ratnakar lashed out at the BJP for insulting national leaders and said it is even prevalent among a section of the educated, terming it as a reflection of distorted thinking.
The former Minister said the Congress is the only party which had consistently opposed the ideology of the RSS. Given the fundamental difference between the two, party workers should continue to fight the BJP’s ideological stance. Unless one studies the BJP’s ideology, it will be difficult to understand why it must be opposed, said Mr. Ratnakar.
Coming down heavily on the BJP, he said more than 450 million people in the country live in poverty and the government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi had failed to address unemployment and hunger issues.
He also warned that the BJP is attempting to alter the Constitution, so the Congress should take a firm ideological stand against it.
Dr. B.J. Vijay Kumar, Congress district unit president, said nearly 5,000 freedom fighters had invested as shareholders in the National Herald newspaper and alleged that the Hindu Mahasabha and RSS had opposed the paper even on national issues pertaining to the freedom struggle at that time. In the present times, there are attempts to control it by misusing the Enforcement Directorate, he added.
The party workers were informed that as per the decision of the national Congress Working Committee, movements related to the National Herald and vote theft should not be halted under any circumstance.
Five senior Congress leaders were felicitated to mark the occasion.
R. Murthy, city Congress president, K. Harish Gowda, Chamaraja Assembly constituency MLA, D. Thimmayya, MLC, H.A. Venkatesh, Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee spokesperson, and others were present.
