The Gudalur police in Theni district seized 190 kg of ganja worth ₹1 crore being smuggled to Kerala on Monday. Four persons were arrested, and two vehicles that were used for transporting the ganja were seized.
During a vehicle check near Othaiveettu Pirivu junction on the bypass road connecting Gudalur and Kumily, the police stopped and inspected two cars that came one after the other. As the occupants gave inconsistent answers, the police conducted a detailed search of the vehicles.
The police seized about 190 kg of ganja concealed in 95 packages. The four persons were taken to the Gudalur North police station for interrogation. During the inquiry, the police found that the ganja was being smuggled for sale in Kerala.
The arrested persons were identified as P. Muthupandi, 25, S. Mohamed Hanifa, 45, M. Aliyar, 46, and R. Eeswaramoorthy, 34, all from Ramanathapuram district.
The police produced the four accused, along with the seized ganja and cars, before the Judicial Magistrate in Uthamapalayam. They were remanded in judicial custody.
The police are searching for Kaleeswaran, also from Ramanathapuram district, in connection with the case.
