21 injured as stray dogs go on biting spree in Vemulawada

A pack of stray dogs went on a biting spree injuring as many as 21 persons, including several devotees, in the temple town of Vemulawada in Rajanna Sircilla district in a span of 24 hours since Wednesday afternoon.

The first incident was reported at Jatara grounds where a rabid dog went berserk and bit eight devotees late on Wednesday afternoon. At least 13 others including several devotees and local residents were bitten by stray dogs in separate dog bite incidents that were reported in the temple town till Thursday morning, sources said.

The injured persons were administered first-aid and anti-rabies vaccines at the Government Area Hospital in Vemulawada. Four of them were referred to the District Headquarters Hospital in Sircilla for better treatment.

The incident triggered renewed demands for immediate steps to check stray dog menace in Vemulawada.

The temple town, popularly known as ‘Dakshin Kashi’, witnesses a huge turnout of devotees ahead of Medaram Sammakka-Sarakka jatara scheduled to be held in Mulugu district from January 28 to 31, 2026.
