267 teachers selected as Principal in govt colleges awaiting appointment order since January

Over 250 teachers, who were selected in January by the State Government for direct appointment as Principal (Grade I) in government degree colleges are awaiting their appointment orders. The 267 candidates were selected through the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA).

Of those selected, 28 persons were teaching in private colleges. The rest are teaching in government degree colleges.

Immediately after the government issued the selection notification on January 31, 2026, and published the selection list in the State Gazette on February 17, 2026, a majority of those working in private colleges — 26 of the 28 teachers — resigned expecting their appointment order. They have been jobless since then, the teachers told The Hindu.

They said two of the 28 teachers are serving their notice period.

Teachers said that they underwent training at Karnataka State Higher Education Academy, Dharwad in three batches. The 15-day training of the last batch was completed on May 6, 2026.

Teachers said that, of those selected, 231 teachers are from Residual Parent Cadre quota while the remaining 36 teachers are from Kalyana Karnataka quota.

Some of the eligibility conditions fixed for selection included that they should have completed their Ph.D., served for 15 years as college teachers, and should be Associate Professors.

The KEA had conducted an examination for their selection in July 2023.

They said the Higher Education Minister Basavaraj Rayaraddi, while speaking at the State-level Teachers’ Day programme on September 5, announced that appointment orders would be issued in a week. But no teacher has received the order.
