A 27-year-old youth was hacked to death following a clash between two groups near Chokkasandra village in Peenya, in Bengaluru, on September 27 night.
The incident is suspected to be the fallout of a quarrel that had taken place during a Ganesha idol procession a day earlier. The deceased has been identified as Deepak, a resident of the Bannerghatta area.
According to police, Deepak and the accused had been involved in a dispute for the past few days. On September 27, Deepak, along with two associates, had participated in a Ganesha idol procession organised in Nandini Layout. The idol was taken to Chokkasandra lake in Peenya for immersion.
While returning after the immersion, Deepak allegedly stepped on the foot of a person, leading to an argument. The quarrel soon escalated, with members of both groups allegedly attacking each other with sharp weapons.
During the clash, Deepak was allegedly stabbed with a dagger by a man identified as Sumanth. The accused group reportedly comprised more than 10 persons. Deepak was injured and died while being taken to a hospital.
Northwest division DCP Nagesh D. L. said the incident occurred around midnight near Chokkasandra village. He said two groups of youths had gathered and got into a quarrel, following which sharp weapons were used.
Police said the clash was reportedly linked to an earlier assault involving Deepak’s friends at Chokkasandra on September 26, with the dispute continuing during the next night’s incident.
The Peenya police have taken six persons into custody so far and are questioning them. Efforts are underway to trace the other suspects. Further investigation is in progress.
