The Andhra Pradesh government has identified 45 acres of land along the Kakinada coast for setting up a regional branch of the Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS).
The Andhra Pradesh Maritime Board signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the INCOIS under the Ministry of Earth Sciences, at the regional conference of the 31st CII Partnership Summit held in Kakinada on October 12.
Minister for Commerce, Trade and Food Processing T. G. Bharat announced that the proposed INCOIS regional centre at Kakinada would be established at an estimated cost of ₹100 crore, and will provide services to nearly seven lakh people along the Andhra Pradesh coast.
According to an official release issued by the District Collector M.N. Harendhira Prasad, the land sought by the INCOIS has been identified along the Kakinada coast. Rajya Sabha MP Sana Satish Kumar had appealed to the Ministry of Earth Sciences for the regional centre in July and it was approved in September. Currently, the nearest INCOIS centre is in Hyderabad.
INCOIS provides information about potential fishing zones, availability of fish species in the respective zones, particularly tuna, ocean-state forecasts, tsunami early warnings and marine advisory services, apart from focussed research on the Bay of Bengal.
