Forty-eight dengue cases have been reported in Erode district this month, including eight cases on Monday (September 21), said District Health Officer P. Aruna.
The district has recorded 480 dengue cases so far this year. Ten persons have also been affected by scrub typhus. As many as 1,209 Domestic Breeding Checkers (DBCs) have been deployed across the district to identify and eliminate mosquito-breeding sources, she added.
The Erode Corporation has deployed another 436 DBCs to check for breeding sources of Aedes aegypti, the dengue-causing mosquito.
Officials said special wards had been set up at the Government Hospital to treat patients with fever. Residents were urged to prevent water stagnation in discarded tyres, broken articles and unused containers. With the northeast monsoon approaching, DBCs were conducting regular checks, officials said.
