Gold jewellery weighing 77.5 sovereigns were reported stolen from the house of a retired headmistress at Palaiyam in Perambalur district when the elderly woman had left for Chennai recently.
A. Rajalakshmi — the retired headmistress had locked her house and left for Chennai on September 10 to be at her daughter’s house when burglars targeted her residence.
The theft came to light on Friday morning when Rajalakshmi’s brother Sivakumar came to her house and found the main gate and the front door lock broken open and gold jewellery kept inside the cupboard stolen.
Among the valuables stolen were four gold bangles, as many bracelets, 20 gold coins, eight pairs of small ear studs, four gold rings, one gold ‘thali’ chain, three gold chains, one pendant, two big gold haarams, one small gold haaram, and a couple of stone necklaces made of gold, said police sources.
Acting on information, the police conducted inquiries at the crime scene where a detective dog of the Perambalur district police was brought to the spot. Fingerprint experts inspected the house in search of prints. The Perambalur Rural police are investigating the case.
