Members of Tamil Nadu All Farmers’ Associations Coordination Committee staged a protest and took out a rally here on Tuesday pressing for relief and crop insurance for paddy and groundnut crops that have withered due to lack of rain in Kamuthi, Kadaladi, and Mudukulathur taluks.
Starting from the Kamuthi Town Panchayat area, farmers marched in a rally carrying placards containing various demands and concluded the rally at the bus stand.
During the protest, they urged that a relief of ₹30,000 per acre should be provided for the affected paddy crops, along with crop insurance compensation.
They also demanded that the affected areas be declared as national disaster areas and all bank loans be waived.
“They insisted that relief be provided for crops damaged by wild animals, including wild boars and deer,” said Muthuramalingam, District Secretary of the Tamil Nadu All Farmers’ Associations Coordination Committee.
“We also want a guarantee that water supply should be provided from Mullaiperiyar and Vaigai dams for single-crop farming in the Kamuthi, Mudukulathur, and Kadaladi areas,” he added.
He emphasised that a primary demand involved the long-standing plea for the Union and State governments to earmark ₹15,000 crore in 2026–2027 budget. This funding is sought to expedite the execution of the Cauvery–Kollidam surplus water initiative and the Cauvery–Vaigai–Gundar canal linking projects.
