Tourism Minister R. Rajendran launched the free meal scheme for conservancy workers by serving breakfast to them in Salem on Monday (February 9, 2026).
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin, on Monday, inaugurated the expansion of the breakfast scheme for conservancy workers in Corporations, municipalities, and town panchayats across the State through video conferencing from Tiruvallur district. Following this, in a function held at a marriage in the Kondalampatti zone in Salem Corporation, the Minister served food to the conservancy workers in the Corporation.
Speaking to the reporters, the Minister said in order to protect the welfare of conservancy workers, Mr. Stalin had expanded the breakfast scheme across the urban local bodies. A total of 5,240 conservancy workers: 3,000 from Suramangalam, Hasthampatti, Ammapet, and Kondalampatti zones; 1,123 from Attur, Mettur, Edappadi, Narasaingapuram, Tharamangalam, Edanganasalai, and Sankari municipalities; and 1,117 workers belonging to 30 town panchayats will be benefited under this scheme, the Minister added.
Salem District Collector R. Brindha Devi, Salem Corporation Mayor A. Ramachandran, Salem Corporation Commissioner M. Elangovan, local body representatives, and other officials participated.
In Namakkal, in the function held at the Corporation marriage hall, Rajya Sabha member K.R.N. Rajeshkumar served food to the conservancy workers.
Officials said that funds worth ₹1.43 crore has been allocated per year for the scheme. As many as 919 workers in four municipalities and 925 workers in 19 town panchayats in Namakkal district will benefit through this expansion.
In the function, District Collector Durgamoorthi, MLA P. Ramalingam, City Mayor D. Kalanidhi and officials from departments concerned also participated.
