A campaign to make Mysuru a ‘child marriage-free district’ was launched on Wednesday with a pledge to eliminate the social evil and emerge as a model district in the State.

Additional Deputy Commissioner P. Shivaraj inaugurated a rally organised as part of the Bal Vivah Mukt Abhiyan, jointly organised by the district administration, Zilla Panchayat and other departments, with the support of various NGOs.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Shivaraj said child marriage is a social evil and stressed that children must receive proper education and enjoy their childhood.

He said the district administration has taken several measures to prevent child marriages. A helpline (1098) has been launched to enable the public to lodge complaints, and immediate action will be taken to stop such marriages. Officials, along with NGOs, regularly visit mass marriage events and other wedding events to check for instances of child marriage. He added that members of the public often alert authorities when they come across such cases.

Emphasising that public support is crucial to eradicate the menace, Dr. Shivaraj called upon citizens to cooperate in making Mysuru a ‘child marriage-free district’.

On the occasion, individuals who had worked towards preventing child marriages were felicitated.

Members of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, child protection officers and representatives of various NGOs were present.
