Managements and principals of several B.Ed. colleges met K. Vivekananda, Member of the Legislative Council (South Teachers’ Constituency) and submitted a memorandum urging the State Government to restore 20% weightage to B.Ed. marks in teacher recruitment instead of the existing 2%.
In their memorandum, the delegation demanded that the earlier provision granting 20% weightage to B.Ed. marks be reinstated.
Responding to the representation, Mr. Vivekananda assured the delegation that he would take up the issue with the concerned Minister and senior officials of the Department of School Education and Literacy.
Subsequently, in the wake of objections raised by B.Ed. colleges and candidates pursuing the course, the MLC wrote to the Principal Secretary, Department of School Education and Literacy, Bengaluru. In his letter, he cited the concerns expressed over the current weightage pattern in teacher recruitment and urged the department to restore the earlier 20% weightage for B.Ed. marks in teacher appointments instead of limiting it to 2%.
As per the present recruitment criteria, marks have been earmarked under various components, including 8% weightage for degree marks, 2% for B.Ed. qualification, and 45% each for TET and CET examinations. He said the core teaching skills required for the profession are imparted through the B.Ed. programme, and hence the qualification deserves better weightage in the selection process.
