A 23-year-old worker from Jharkhand died after falling from Chennai Metro Rail’s viaduct while he was engaged in construction work on the Poonamallee-Vadapalani stretch, a section of phase II project, on Friday night, police sources said.

The victim has been identified as Soray Ganjhu, who was working in the phase II project for the past 11 months.

The accident occurred at pillar number 185 on Arcot Road in Valasaravakkam while Ganjhu was working on the viaduct. He lost his balance and fell on the ground, sustaining severe head injuries.

Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) officials claimed that the worker was wearing a harness during duty. “But, just as he was finishing his work, he removed the harness and that’s when he slipped and fell. His family will receive the compensation shortly,” an official said.

Other workers alerted an ambulance and rushed him to a nearby private hospital, but doctors declared him dead on arrival, police sources said. His body was sent to the Government Hospital for a post-mortem examination.

The Valasaravakkam police registered a case and were inquiring whether safety protocols, including the use of harnesses and safety nets, were followed at the construction site at the time of the incident.
