Flying squads and static surveillance teams have made several seizures of unaccounted gold jewellery during enforcement of the Model Code of Conduct (MCC) that is in place for the April 9 Assembly elections.

According to a press note, the teams are functioning round-the-clock to prevent any form of inducement to voters. The flying squads are equipped with body-worn cameras, with live-monitoring enabled at the Integrated Election Command Centre.

In one recent instance, a team of Grand Bazaar police station, comprising D. Murugan, Illakiyavendhan, and Jayasuriya, along with the Special Task Force team, consisting of S. Ambethkar, S. Prabakaran, Murugan, and V. Visu, intercepted an individual and seized gold jewellery weighing 2015.73 grams (net weight), with a total weight of 2081.17 grams, including cover and pins.

A Flying Squad team headed by R. Arunachalam, Executive Magistrate, and comprising P. Thirumalai Balakrishnan, Kumud Das and H. Jukamchand of Indo-Tibetan Border Police (Unit 51 BN ITBP), and Krishnamurthy, apprehended a person in possession of gold ornaments weighing 908.57 grams (net weight), with a total weight of 1141.50 grams, including the box, which were subsequently seized.

In both the cases, the individuals concerned were unable to produce valid documentary evidence, such as purchase invoices or supporting transaction records to establish the lawful possession of the gold articles.

Accordingly, the gold jewellery was weighed, documented, and seized in accordance with prescribed procedures in the presence of independent witnesses.

The seized items weighing 2924.300 grams (net weight), with a total weight of 3222.67 grams, including box, covers and pins, were produced before K.P. Sreejith, Municipal Commissioner-cum-Returning Officer – VIl and have been placed in safe custody in the Treasury, pending further investigation by Income Tax Authorities.

As an encouragement for ensuring strict enforcement of the MCC, the personnel were felicitated by P. Jawahar, Chief Electroal Officer, the press note said.
