‘America America 2’ movie review: A familiar story in search of its voice

Director Nagathihalli Chandrashekhar has repeatedly emphasised that America America 2 is only a spiritual sequel to his 1997 blockbuster. However, the original film’s iconic status is bound to raise expectations among audiences looking forward to the new release. Unfortunately, the latest film struggles to live up to those expectations.

Being drawn back to an ex while caught in a tumultuous relationship is hardly a new theme in cinema. When memories once marked as wounds begin to heal, they can unexpectedly transform into a source of comfort and solace. That’s what happens in America America 2, when Nudi (Shanvi Srivastava) meets Neel (Pruthvi Ambaar) in Seattle.

Nudi, a career-driven woman, is looking for a husband who could primarily take responsibility for caring for her father. She believes Ninad (Nirup Bhandari) is the perfect fit for the role. While he excels at that responsibility, Nudi gradually realises what she truly misses is a partner who can understand her emotions. A workaholic by nature, Ninad is far from the ideal husband she needs.

Nudi finds the emotional connection she has been missing in Neel, who re-enters her life as a colleague in Seattle. A woman seeking companionship outside a tumultuous marriage is hardly a radical plot point in cinema. The bigger problem with America America 2, however, is that it never convincingly fleshes out the idea. Neel and Nudi show little of the anxiety or emotional tension one would expect from two former lovers meeting again after years apart in a different country. Instead, they slip back into their old equation as though they had never broken up. The film’s transition from one conflict to the next often feels mechanical rather than organic.

America America 2 also struggles to find a clear identity. It touches upon feminism, explores motherhood, and takes aim at fraudulent godmen. While the film has plenty to say, it tries to tackle too many themes without settling on a central idea and exploring it with the depth and focus it deserves.

The convenience in the writing doesn’t help the film. The breakup episode of Nudi and Ninad feels rushed, while Ninad’s transformation from an emotionally distant husband into a caring partner is reduced to a preachy scene. Nudi’s emotions also shift quite easily, with the screenplay rarely giving her enough room to process or reflect on what she truly wants.

America America 2 takes an empathetic look at people yearning for love while grappling with loneliness. Nudi is still struggling to come to terms with the emotional turmoil following her mother’s death. Neel, living alone in a foreign country, cannot move on from his memories of Nudi. Ninad, who grew up in an orphanage, finds in his father-in-law the father figure he never had.

The lead cast delivers sincere performances, making it easy to empathise with their respective struggles. With the actors in good form and the film set against gorgeous locations, America America 2 had the makings of a warm, feel-good drama — the kind of film that has been missing from Kannada cinema. However, despite its noble intentions, the film falls short because of its execution.

America America is currently running in theatres
