Visually challenged students write exams without help of scribes at Andhra Loyola College

Nine visually challenged students studying first-year degree course in Andhra Loyola College (ALC) wrote their first mid-semester examinations without the help of scribes on Thursday.

The students keyed in their answers on laptops, after which the answer scripts were printed and forwarded to the respective examiners for evaluation.

College Principal Fr. Melchior said the initiative reflects ALC’s commitment to inclusive education and the use of accessible technology to empower students with disabilities.

Correspondent Fr. Francis Xavier described the initiative as an important step towards helping visually challenged students become confident and independent learners.

With this, 16 of the 36 visually challenged students enrolled across the Intermediate and Degree programmes at ALC are now able to write examinations independently using laptops.

Professor of Physics and Coordinator of the Higher Education and Persons with Special Needs (HEPSN) initiative G. Sahaya Baskaran said the objective was to enable every visually challenged student to write the examinations independently without the help of scribes.
