Tiruchi Corporation has planned to restore and redevelop Kottapattu Periyakulam, a major waterbody along the Tiruchi–Pudukottai National Highway, at an estimated cost of ₹31.31 crore.
Of the ₹31.31 crore project cost, ₹10.96 crore each will be availed as a loan and grant from the German development bank KfW under the Sustainable Municipal Infrastructure Financing in Tamil Nadu Phase III (SMIF-TN-III) while ₹4.69 crore will be sourced from the Capital Grant Fund and ₹4.70 crore from Corporation funds.
The tank, which once spread over 75 acres, has been reduced to about 47.5 acres due to rapid urbanisation and encroachments. The waterbody retains water throughout the year and attracts a large number of winged visitors, particularly during the winter months.
Following demands from residents, the Corporation developed the waterbody as a recreational space in September 2023, with a walking track, seating areas, decorative plants, beautification lights, and metal fencing.
However, inadequate maintenance resulted in rampant growth of aquatic weeds and invasive plants, affecting the appearance of the waterbody and leading to a decline in the number of visitors.
As part of the proposed restoration, the Corporation plans to desilt the tank, clear the weeds, strengthen the bunds, and prevent the inflow of sewage. The inlet and outlet sluices will be renovated to enhance water storage and groundwater recharge. The project is aimed at mitigating flooding in nearby residential areas during the monsoon.
The redevelopment plan includes a floating boat jetty, a five-acre public park, viewing decks, solar lighting, and planting of native tree species. The proposed restoration is expected to improve the ecological value of the waterbody while providing a recreational space for residents.
The Corporation has earmarked ₹2.3 crore towards the operation and maintenance of the facilities for five years. A tender has been floated, and an agency will be identified to execute and maintain the project.
