New synthetic athletic track at sports complex in Ramanathapuram nears completion

The construction of a new synthetic athletic track at Seethakathi Sethupathi Sports Complex here is nearing completion. The ₹10.75-crore project was launched virtually by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on December 31, 2024.

District Sports Officer M. Dhinesh Kumar said the 400-metre track and field stadium was upgraded from a conventional concrete surface to a synthetic facility. While the previous stadium served the local community well, it fell short of international standards for athletes striving for excellence. “This 400-metre track, equipped with facilities for events such as javelin and discus, alongside a national-standard grass football field, will become a premier sporting hub in the region.”

Following a site inspection by Collector M. Sivaguru Prabhakaran, authorities reviewed key aspects such as track levelling and resilience against rain and changing weather conditions, Mr. Kumar added.

“Since it features a natural grass field, a reliable water supply and proper drainage systems are essential. Work on those components is under way,” he added.

If the work continued at the same pace, the project could be wrapped up within a month, allowing the facility to be opened to the public and athletes in about two months., he further said
