A 21-year-old woman has alleged that two unidentified men on a motorcycle chased and harassed her before pushing her scooter near Panchsheel Metro Station in south Delhi in the early hours of September 12, leaving her with serious injuries. The Hauz Khas police have registered an FIR under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and said the investigation is underway.
According to the 22-page complaint submitted to the Hauz Khas police on September 15, accessed by The Hindu, Gauri Kashyap, who works at an office in Saket, was returning home on her scooter after leaving work around midnight on September 11. She alleged that while she was crossing Hauz Khas and was near Panchsheel Metro Station, two men, apparently in their twenties, riding a motorcycle, began passing remarks at her and teasing her.
The woman alleged that the men then followed her on their motorcycle as she tried to move away. According to her complaint, they came alongside her scooter and continued mumbling remarks before allegedly pushing her scooter with their motorcycle.
She said she lost control, fell and skidded for around 100 to 150 metres on a stretch of road covered with stones, gravel and dust. She sustained multiple injuries and the two men fled immediately after the incident.
Members of the public subsequently gathered at the spot and arranged medical assistance, the complaint stated. An ambulance was called, after which her colleagues, who had been alerted after she shared her live location, reached the spot.
Ms. Kashyap was taken to Max Hospital in Saket, where she was treated through the night and discharged around 7 a.m. She was subsequently shifted to Medanta Hospital in Noida for further treatment. According to her complaint, doctors at Medanta advised her to undergo plastic surgery for the injuries sustained in the incident. She has since travelled to Kanpur for a second medical opinion.
The woman has alleged that she suffered deep cuts, extensive bleeding and loss of skin in several places and continues to experience pain and distress. The victim has attached hospital bills, prescriptions, details of medical treatment and images of injuries with the complaint.
Police said that a PCR call reporting a road accident was received at the Hauz Khas police station around 1 a.m. on the intervening night of September 11 and 12. The investigating officer reached the reported spot but did not find anyone there and learnt that the injured woman had been taken to Max Hospital.
Police said that when they reached the hospital, they learnt that the woman had already been discharged at her request. Police later learnt that she had left Delhi for further treatment.
The police said CCTV footage from adjoining areas was examined to verify the occurrence, but the incident could not be traced in the available footage. On September 14, the complainant’s cousin sister also visited the police station and viewed the available camera footage but could not identify the woman or the alleged assailants, police said.
The FIR has since been registered under the appropriate sections of law, police said, adding that efforts were continuing to verify the allegations and establish the complete sequence of events. The complainant has also requested police to obtain and preserve CCTV footage from Hauz Khas, Hauz Khas Metro Station, Panchsheel Metro Station and surrounding roads to identify the men and their motorcycle.
The incident comes days after a woman biker was chased and hit by a car on Gurugram’s Golf Course Road, an episode that was captured on camera and subsequently went viral.
