A drive to plant one lakh palmyra tree seeds around Senkazhuneer lake in Thanjavur district was launched on Thursday.
The drive, to be implemented through the Senkazhuneer Lake Renovation Committee, was inaugurated by Collector R. Revathi.
The over 1,000-year-old Chola-period lake spread of over 642 acres to the west of Kallaperambur in the district had been identified for planting the palm tree seeds though the National Service Scheme and voluntary organisations, an official press release said.
The tank has an ayacut of 2,663 acres in seven villages and the Senkazhuneer Lake Renovation Committee had mobilised resources and strengthened the lake bunds for about 1 km and built bunds afresh for a stretch of about 10 km, besides clearing wild growth and renovating the irrigation shutters. The palm seeds would be planted along the tank bunds in association various government and voluntary organisations including Rotary Club of Thanjavur and Inner-Wheel Club, the release added.
